TOP athletes head to Gulu for the inaugural Justin Arop Memorial meet on Saturday, writes Norman Katende.

Arop (left) was an outstanding javelin thrower, who once held the African record and his throw of 75.52 in 1988 is still the national record.

Pece Stadium will host the last national track and field trial that is offering the last chance for athletes vying to qualify for the African Senior championships due August 9-13 in Mauritius. The meet entry deadline is July 23.

“It is the first field event in the country. We will have throws and jumps. We will also have few track events. We do not have a sponsor yet but I think the turn up will be good,” said Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) secretary Beatrice Ayikoru about the meet, to be held in an area that has produced athletes.

The renown ones include John Baptiste Okello (110mH), Yovan Ochola and Joyce Aciiro (shot put), Samuel Onyac and Hellen Alyek (discuss), Ochola (high jump), Arop (Javelin), Alex Acen (decathlon), Olive Acii (100m and 200m), who all hold national records, most of them set before the 1980s.

“Its a national and memorial event that is expected to attract stars beyond the northern districts. Stars from as far as West Nile and also Kampala are expected to compete. I think we will be able to get a sponsor as time goes on,” Ayikoru added.
