ACHOLI cultural leaders are waiting to cleanse LRA leader Joesph Kony, should he come out of the bush after the Juba peace talks, Paramount Chief David Acana II has said.
Acana was optimistic that a peace pact would be signed after the talks and requested that Kony be treated fairly in case he comes out of the bush.
He said cultural leaders were ready to foster reconciliation between the Acholi and LRA like it was with brigadiers Kenneth Banya and Sam Kolo.
“We have our general system of reconciliation, which has already been tested. It begins with cleansing. We do it publicly and give opportunity to all people to interact and reconcile. People want peace,” Acana said at his Gulu residence.
He was on Thursday meeting the new United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative and UN resident coordinator in Uganda, Theophane Nikyema.
Nikyema, who replaced Dauda Toure, was on a three-day familiarisation visit of war-torn northern Uganda.
Acana said he was closely working with the Acholi religious leaders to secure peace and reconciliation in Acholi sub-region and called for UNDP support.
He said the LRA’s return would mean the end of war and beginning of peace in Acholi sub-region and the entire north, where people have suffered a lot.
He said they would institute a committee of elders to oversee the resettlement exercise.
