The Kampala Serena Hotel’s renovation costs went up to $30.5m to complete the two phases at the same time before reopening to the public.

“The cost of implementing the first phase was $26.5m, and the project was on schedule for completion in March.

“However, in November 2005, the board of directors felt that it would be a mistake to implement phase two after the opening of the hotel as there would be disruption to hotel services,” said Mahmud Janmohamed, the managing director, Serena Hotels.

“The board therefore decided to bring forward phase two and the total project cost was therefore increased to $30.5m and completion date extended to July 31,” said Janmohamed.

The initial cost of renovation was estimated at $18m for the first phase.

He said the objective from the outset was to create the finest facility in the region.

“We are accepting bookings from July 31. We are currently in the final phase of finishes and staff training which is progressing extremely well,” Janmohamed said.

He said the management was pleased to report that all the commitments Serena Hotels included in the tender document had been met.

“In fact, in most cases, have been exceeded, and that they are extremely proud of this achievement.

“We have a great team of staff, majority of them are Ugandans who have responded most positively to training, and we are confident that the Kampala Serena Hotel will set new standards related to innovative food and beverage outlets and providing caring service to our clients,” Janmohamed.

The former Nile Hotel was leased to the Serena Group for 30 years.
Implementation was to be done in two phases.
