FOUR deacons were on Saturday ordained priests while four seminarians were ordained deacons in the Catholic Church at the Uganda Martyrs’ Cathedral, Nyangole, near Tororo town, writes Joseph Wanzusi.
Archbishop James Odongo of Tororo Archdiocese conferred the order of priesthood to Joseph Alakun, John Mesya, Alexander Okech and John Bosco Nambasi after they completed training.
The four seminarians ordained deacons included Moses Kisaka, Bernard Ochwo, Pius Okech and Bernard Bubolo at a colourful ceremony co-celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Charles Martin Wamika and Emeritus Bishop Joseph Oyanga.
Odongo told the newly-ordained priests to be accommodative to the needs of the people they preach to, without compromising the Gospel.
“As a preacher of the Word and servant of the Lord, the priest must translate the ever-new, perennial message of the Gospel into the languages and cultures of the people whom he serves, so that they can experience the living Christ,” Odongo said.
Odong, who quoted extensively from the Bible, said a priest should not shield himself and live a life of privilege, but rather identify with the suffering and the needy so as to fulfils the command of Jesus Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.
