COMPUTER labs at Taibah College School (TCS) turned into some kind of newsroom last Thursday as 11 local schools teamed up to produce a magazine.

The 52-page magazine is being produced in partnership with schools in Britain under the ‘Crossing Continents London-Kampala Bridge The Gap’ project.

The magazine is a brainchild of TCS headteacher Oskar Ssemweya Musoke and is supported by the British Council.

The participating primary schools included Lohana Academy, Greenhill Academy, City Parents and Taibah Junior School, while the secondary schools included King’s College Budo, TCS, Aga Khan, Gayaza High School, Taibah High School and St Mary‘s College Kisubi.

With guidance from teachers and a team from The New Vision, the students and pupils formed editorial teams and worked on the magazine.

Ssemweya said schools in Hammersmith and Hounslow, Britain, also participated in a similar exercise, adding that the work would be merged for the final product.

He said the project was prompted by a need to reduce ignorance among students.

“I realised that children in the UK had stereotypes about African children and vice versa. The magazine would provide them with an opportunity of learning about each other’s culture,” Ssemweya said.

Expanding the students’ knowledgewas another objective.

Asked about the project, Carol Nakku, from TCS, said, “It is very educative and interesting. It can improve students’ writing skills and encourage teamwork.”
