NOT often do you get Ugandans speaking Japanese or Japanese speaking local Ugandan languages. But vying for accolades in speaking Japanese and Luganda over 20 Ugandans recently took part in the first Japanese writing and speaking competition at Makerere University.
Japanese like Ken-ichi Shiiya a.k.a Yiga and Higuchi Kazuhiko struggled their best to speak and sing in Luganda to promote the Ugandan culture.
Moses Muwonge Bugi won the Japanese writing essay competition, as Risasi Afekuru Animu, a female participant, was applauded by the audience for a passionate speech that earned her the best Japanese-speaking award.
Patrick Lumumba, Brian Ddumba and Samuel Mugisha among others also won different prizes for promoting the Japanese culture.
This is the first Japanese speech and writing essay competition in Uganda. The competitions are to be held annually.
