JANET Mureeba, the former accountant of Luzira Prisons, is to hang for masterminding the murder of her co-wife and her daughter.
The Supreme Court coram of five justices that was chaired by Justice Arthur Haggai Oder before his death, unanimously upheld the conviction and sentence of death against Mureeba and two men, including a former soldier.

The court ruled that the trial court rightly convicted the appellants and the Court of Appeal was also correct to uphold the conviction and the sentence of death as there was overwhelming circumstantial evidence against all the three accused people.

Mureeba, former soldier Ismail Aliga and self-employed Kassim byaruhanga were convicted and sentenced to death in 2000 by Justice Augustus Kania of the High Court for the death of Mureeba’s co-wife, Norah Namara.

Namara was gunned down together with her 18-month-old daughter Gabriella Mureeba at their home in Ntinda on June 6, 1999.
Namara was seven months pregnant.

During the proceedings yesterday, Mureeba, 50, kept looking down as she rested her head in her right palm.

After the judge had pronounced the verdict, she looked deeply depressed and winked continuously as if she was preventing tears from rolling down her face.

Mureeba and her co-convicts were returned to Luzira Prison.
