Energy minister Daudi Migereko has encouraged schools, hospitals, urban centres and other institutions to use solar power to reduce the high demand for hydro power. This follows a meeting he held with a Spanish investor, Christian Hererro, who is interested in developing solar energy use in Uganda. Hererro has assisted countries like Kenya, Senegal and Morocco to install solar power in schools and urban centres. They also discussed opportunities to access Spanish government assistance in the development of solar power.

MBARARA: Study done
The China Shang Sheng Industry (Uganda) Ltd has completed a feasibility study for the establishment of Kikagati mini hydro-electric power project. The 10MW project to be operated on a public-private partnership, will generate electricity mainly for the tin mining venture in the area.

KAMPALA: Police arrest
The Police yesterday said they were still holding 18 out of 200 people rounded up in Katanga slum last week following the theft of a Police gun. After a screening exercise at Wandegeya Police Station, 180 people were released. Police chief Grace turyagumanawe said the suspects would be arraigned in court on various charges. By yesterday, the gun had not been found.

KAMPALA: Expert here
Colin Gilligan, a renowned marketing guru and a professor at Sheffield Hallam university, is in Uganda on the invitation of the British Council to meet various chief executives and managers. Steven Kisingiri, the head of education services at the British Council, said Gilligan would address various workshops and present papers on different topics.
