Samia Bugwe North MP Stephen Mugeni Wasike has petitioned the Court of Appeal contesting the High Court ruling nullifying his election. Speaking to journalists at Parliament yesterday, Mugeni said the ruling had many contradictions. Mbale resident judge John Bosco Katutsi last Thursday nullified Mugeni’s election, saying he did not qualify for nomination as a candidate. Former MP Aggrey Awori contested his election.

Minister raps

Disaster preparedness minister Prof. Tarsis kabwegyere has warned those frustrating the government’s efforts to return displaced persons home. He said some people were profiteering from the continued stay of displaced persons in camps. “There are some people who are vegetating on the misery of the IDPs. They are discouraging them from returning to their villages because they will lose financial benefits,” Kabwegyere said on Friday while meeting MPs from the opposition.

Artistes held
MITYANA
Local artistes Iryn namubiru, Butchaman and five others, including queen dancers, were on Sunday night held up by angry fans at Mityana New highway Hotel, where they had gone to stage a show. The fans threatened to beat them to death after the public address system failed to work. They held sticks, bottles and stones and tried to beat the artistes, who hid in a hotel room.

Project starts
BULIISA
Construction of a multi-million shilling piped water scheme has started in Wantembo village, Butiaba. The Ministry of Defence has released sh146m for the project. The scheme is to benefit at least 10,000 people in the army field artillery and air defence training wing located in the area and surrounding villages.

Odoki named
GULU
The Rev. Father Sabino Ocan Odoki has been named the Auxilliary Bishop of Gulu archdiocese. The archdiocese covers Nebbi, Arua and Lira dioceses. The Catholic Information Service for Africa said yesterday Odoki, 49, has a Ph.D in Sacred Theology.
