By Sylvia Juuko AMFRI Farms has exported about 12 tonnes of processed fruits to Denmark, signaling the country’s effort to make inroads into the lucrative Danish market. Joyce Kalenda, the public relations assistant of Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) said the consignment, which was shipped on June 27, comprised frozen apple banana puree, passion fruit juice and sliced pineapples. “The facility at UIRI in Nakawa was used by Amfri to process the fruits. The facility is well-equipped with staff and machinery to ensure quality production and processing of the fruits into fresh fruit pulp for export,†Kalenda said. She said since December 2004, Amfri has been working with its Danish customer, Solhjulet, with support from DANIDA on a pilot project that benefited its farmers and culminated into the export of organic chilies and aubergines to Denmark. Kalende said over 20 tonnes of passion fruits, 5,500 pineapples and four tonnes of banana were processed into pulp and puree for export. In Denmark, the fruits will be processed for a tropical yoghurt mix with Dairy Foods. Ends
