It was a blend of celebration and distress as humanitarian and aid workers from West Nile converged to bid farewell to the outgoing UNHCR head of Arua sub-office, Dr. Hepie Marcellin, on Friday.
Celebrating the achievements attained over his two years in office and distressed that a diligent comrade had to leave the country, colleagues threw a farewell party for Marcellin at the UN refugee agency offices in Arua.
Guests came from as far as southern Sudan and Congo, where Marcellin’s successor, Barry Abdulaye, had been working as senior repatriation officer.
Marcellin, an Ivorian, awaits deployment but chances are high he will be promoted to a country representative or a deputy.
The resident district commissioner, Alfred Omony Ogaba and Yumbe district chairman Rashid Govule Iyiga praised Marcellin for successfully overseeing the repatriation of the first batch of refugees to Sudan after 20 years in Uganda.
The chairperson of the refugee welfare council, Charles Amule, said the refugees were proud of Marcellin for promoting their security and freedom.
Marcellin has also been the area security coordinator covering West Nile, parts of Congo and southern Sudan.
