THE Government is planning to stop the transportation of animals from the countryside to the city, state minister for animal husbandry Maj. Bright Rwamirama has said.

He said the Government was planning to set up modern upcountry abattoirs where the animals would be slaughtered and the meat transported to Kampala.

He told a breakfast meeting for MPs from pastoral areas organised by the Land Alliance yesterday at Sheraton Hotel, that the move was aimed at controlling the spread of cattle diseases and the abuse of animal rights during the transportation process.

“We want to set up modern abattoirs in every cattle-producing district and put a stop to transporting 20 head of cattle of about 30 tonnes on a lorry. This will limit abuse of animal rights and consumers will be able to buy meat cheaply,” he said.

However, the manager of city abattoirs, Sowedi Arinaitwe, said the government’s proposal might face a lot of challenges given the fact that meat business is still in the hands of private and small business people.
