THE Democratic Party (DP) has called on the Government to implement the law that provides for state funding of political parties, to enable parties achieve equity in delivering civic education.

Addressing journalists on the memorandum that DP presented to President Yoweri Museveni during Friday’s talks with the opposition leaders at State House, party president Ssebaana Kizito said multiparty competition had failed to compete well due to lack of state funding.

“Government should immediately implement the provision of the law that provides for state funding of political parties,” Ssebaana said.

DP also wants the Government to stop ‘arbitrary donation’ of land to foreign investors, saying State House should let government departments and agencies dealing with land work without interference.

“We demand that a transparent competitive system of bidding for land development be instituted. We recognise that there is no available investable land in Uganda, which is free.

“DP finds it unacceptable that some of these lands being dished out to the proposed investors are displacing legal establishments.

“DP is vehemently opposed to the arbitrary system under your presidency of awarding land to foreign investors. State House should allow government departments and agencies to function without unduly influencing their work. Investors must follow proper procedures in the law,” he said.

DP also demanded that government creates an independent judiciary. “We reject the appointment of political party cadres as judges,” Ssebaana said.
