BONIFACE Kiprop will miss the August 9-13 Africa Senior Athletics championships in Mauritius because of commitments in Europe.

Uganda will send a team of five led by World steeplechase queen Dorcus Inzikuru to Mauritius.

“He is preparing for the Van Damme memorial meet which is basically at the same time hence he can not make it,” disclosed athletics federation publicist Namayo Mawerere.

Missing Mauritius will reduce Kiprop’s chances of making it to the World Final due in Athens September 16-17 which brings together winners of the different continental championships.

The UAF technical committee also named a team of seven to the World Junior Championships due in Beijing August 15-20, including two-time 800m national champion Monica Akello from Sacred High School Gulu.

“The teams might change depending on the availability of funds,” explained Mawerere.

THE TEAMS
Seniors:
D. Inzikuru (3000mSc), I. Kiprop (10000m), M. Kipsiro (5000m), Justine Bayiga (100m, 400m) and Annet Kabasindi (Javelin)
Juniors: Abraham Chepkirwok (800m), Simon Ayeko (1500m, 5000m), Benjamin Kiplagat (3000mSc), Jimmy Adar (800m, 1500m), Geoffrey Kusuro (5000m), Stephen Chiprotich (10000m) and Monica Akello (800m).

* Stephen Odwar will retain the national 100m title after the UAF technical committee found no ground to strip it off him.

At their meeting in Kampala, the committee clarified that Yossam Kasango appeared to have stepped on the line first, but the torso (the body part that excludes the head and limbs) of Odwar was ahead of his, hence upholding the results.

“It’s the torso we considered most when crossing the line,” explained federation vice president technical Okot Omwony.

Okot Omwony confessed they did not have video recordings to analyse the Saturday 100m final race.
