IN the absence of Boniface Kiprop, Moses Kipsiro and Isaac Kiprop will carry Uganda’s long distance flag in Mauritius this week.

Uganda’s team to the Africa Senior Athletics Championships left yesterday for Mauritius confident of competing favourably against the continent’s best led by powerhouses Kenya and Ethiopia.

The team of four —Justine Bayigga, Annet Kabasindi, Kipsiro and Kiprop — were facilitated to the biennial event by international kit manufacturers PUMA, and the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF).

Kabasindi, Uganda’s captain at the Abuja All Africa Games, will guide the team as group leader after UAF decided against sending an official for the meet and instead boosted Uganda’s entry for the championship from three to four athletes.

Kabasindi was confident the team would do well in the absence on Kiprop, who pulled out to concentrate on the European circuit, and Dorcus Inzikuru, who is being rested to allow her recover from injury.

“Medals depend on tactics not speed, but the fact is that we have gone out to compete and will give our best,” said Kabasindi.

Bayigga will compete in the 200m and 400m event, where she holds the national crowns and is one of East Africa’s best. Kabasindi will compete in the javelin (51.8m is her best).

Kiprop, a veteran of Uganda’s junior cross country team, will race in his favourite 10000m (28:27.0).

Kipsiro, who has competed at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, will run the 5000m where he has a best time of 13:01.88.
