PADER district LC5 chairman Peter Odok Wod Oceng has commended the UPDF and other security officials in the district for fighting the LRA rebels.
Odok, who was on Monday addressing the district council, said the major challenge facing the UPDF is to secure the border with Kotido district in order to prevent rebels from raiding cattle and looting food from the population. He said cattle raids were rampant in Agago county
“We appreciate the efforts of the UPDF soldiers in reducing the threats by the LRA. We thank them for controlling the Karimojong warriors too. We feel, however, that if the LRA rebels remnants do not want to come out, they should be forced to do so.
“We also appreciate the current peace talks going on in Juba between the Government and the LRA delegations and it’s our prayer that they bear fruit,” Odok said.
He added, “The security situation in our district is improving and the numbers of the rebels have greatly reduced, since many of them have either been put out of action, captured or forced to surrender or defect to the UPDF.
However, the people of Paimol, Lapono, Lukole, Adilang, Parabongo and Patongo sub-counties still face security threats and their properties from the Karimojong warriors from Kotido district.”
Odok, however, said since March this year, the Karimojong warriors had killed at least eight people from the sub-counties of Adilang, Lapono, Paimol. He said they had also stolen 179 head of cattle from Adilang, Lapono and Patongo sub-counties, out of which only 17 had been recovered from Kotido through the efforts of the Pader resident district commissioner (RDC), Lt. Santos Okot Lapolo.
“I thank the UPDF for controlling the Karimojong cattle rustlers. My appeal to the RDC and armed forces is that, if the Karimojong warriors enter our district again, they should be disarmed and arrested,” Odok said.
