MOSES Kipsiro capped years of promise in the long distance races by winning his first final on the international scene yesterday.

The 19-year-old, already a bronze medallist behind Kenenisa Bekele in the 5000m last week, raced away with the 10000m gold at the 15th Africa Senior Athletics Championships.

The win booked him a ticket he had missed by coming third in the 5000m — a place on the African team to the World Cup in Greece next month and automatic qualification for the 2007 World Championships in Japan.

This performance confirms the potential officials had seen in him in his teens when he was being groomed as Boniface Kiprop’s running mate.

He suffered most by deciding to compete outside the official Uganda Athletics Federation circuit in 2004, and missed out on crucial international exposure that Kiprop benefited from. When he saw sense after running in vain and returned a year later, Kipsiro was a shadow of his past.

He was greatly off the pace, that, there was genuine fear he might have missed the ship altogether. Luckily, all that was missing to complete his development was international exposure.

Having featured on the European circuit and the Commonwealth Games, Kipsiro is now his own man on the track in the long distance races.

Together with Kiprop, they will conquer the world.
