Sheillah Nvannungi's launch of her Malaika album last Friday at UMA Conference Hall, Lugogo can aptly be summed in what the rather tipsy Nile Breweries marketing manager Robert Kigula said at the show: “Sheila has launched in a way that Kampala has not seen before.”
The uniqueness that he referred to was patent in more ways than one. First of all, this was not just a musical show. No sir. It was a dinner and guests had to part with a hefty sh100,000 for a ticket.
It naturally followed that everyone at the show had a seat reserved at a table. No crowds pushing. While Bobi Wine (whose sh10,000 VIP launch at Hotel Equatorial run concurrently with Nvannungi's that same night) had to turn away people, Nvannungi's was a highly controlled affair. Needless to say, food and drinks flowed. The setting was glitzy with a well-decorated hall and stage. Unlike lesser launches where you have a queue of artistes, only General Mega Dee performed at Nvannungi's VIP launch. Nvannungi too got to perform of course –– in two parts. Among songs she performed were Obwomu Buluma, Yongeza, Omukwano Ogutafa, Wanaichi, Nahotha (Captain), Nzae Mukyalawo, Ekiwangula Omutima, Nantamegwa, Eriisao, malika and Olusirika.
The height of her performances was a stint she pulled off with embattled Dr. Aggrey Kayingi, a cadeologist. They danced together, he sang along with her and, for the moment, his troubles seemed to have vanished.
However, through all the merry-making, MC Bbaale Francis never let us forget the bigger reason for the launch –– to help raise awareness for the Cancer Institute in Mulago! That we did all right. The launch was sponsored by Club Pilsner who sank sh10m in the do.
