By Joel Ogwang MUKONO district has earmarked sh600m to establish model villages, the LC5 chief, Francis Lukooya, has said. Lukooya said 145 model farms would be formed, which would increase to 155 by the end of the year. “Mukono was once a national food basket. It is unfortunate that we have to buy food from other areas. We want to reinstate our past glory,†he said. A model village is a demonstration garden where all food and cash crops are grown. Lukooya said the project was in line with the Government’s Bona Bagaggawale (wealth for all) Scheme. The scheme empowers all Ugandans to earn sh20m annually from their agro- and business ventures. Mukono recently got a sh800m boost from the Government for implementing the Bona Bagaggawale programme. The district chief said the scheme would also target poultry and fish farming. “When we finalise the ground work, we shall resort to zoning. Every sub- county will be expected to concentrate on production of a common crop,†Lukooya said. He said youths who can’t engage in agriculture would go for vocational training. Ends
