MAYOR Hajji Nasser Sebaggala has supported Kampala City Council FC fans demanding changes in the management of the club.
The fans argue that changes in the club constitution will help restore glory to the Lugogo-based soccer team.
Sebaggala who became patron of the club by virtue of his election as city mayor, on Thursday met fans to discuss a 17 point letter to him detailing various reasons KCC FC has steadily deteriorated.
“I have read the club constitution, but we have to understand that today football is business. I don’t agree with restrictions of the chairmanship to KCC officials only,†he told the fans.
The memorandum that demanded election of new leaders in 30 days, cited poor leadership that has resulted in accumulated arrears of players and bickering among the club officials. “I will work hard to see positive changes in the club,†Sebaggala promised.
Kampala Central division chairman Godfrey Nyakana and Makindye division chairman Moses Kalungi have declared their interest to contest to lea the club, but the constitution bars them.
Only the deputy mayor, city engineer and town clerk are eligible to contest to lead KCC.
Godfrey Kisekka, is the acting chairman.
A six-man fans’ committee led by councillor John Mutenda briefed the mayor on state of affairs at the club.
He offered sh5m to the committee while Nyakana and Kalungi also contributed sh0.1m each in cash to settle some of the problems that include none payment of players’ salaries and allowances.
Tension is also brewing at the homes of the other two giant Kampala clubs, SC Villa and Express with angry fans demanding reforms. Villa will hold elections in December.
