SIR— I have, over the past few weeks been shocked though not surprised, by the court's decision that an “independent†Makerere Uiversity Business School (MUBS) should mantain the name Makerere. To me this whole saga has reached crisis proportions that even the people who are in position to end it, just precipitate it.
It is not too difficult to see that the two names are related. Mantaining the name would essentially imply that MUBS is an affilliate and not independent of Makerere University. What amuses me is why MUBS is refusing to enjoy the independence she has always laboured for. This has made me believe something I have all along considered to be malicious rumours — the politics of education, in all its dimensions. It seems there are people in the Government who are benefiting from this saga and just don’t it to end.
I remember a time when Makerere university council’s policy that heads of schools, faculties or colleges must possess at least a doctorate degree and be professors was overruled. This was just to favour MUBS! For heaven's sake let MUBS be independent like other independent universities in the country that have their own names.
Shame on MUBS and on all the supporters in government who think that MUBS can only survive by mantaining the name "Makerere" yet claiming to be independent. Remeber this School is located in Nakawa, which gives you the idea of what its real name should be. How shameless can opportunists be! MUBS, located in Nakawa and carrying Makerere University logo and motto, has the reckless courage to claim to be independent of Makerere!
Shockingly, nobody at MUBS seems to see or admit the contradiction! No wonder it is a business school, and her administrators only think of money that can only be made with the name tag “Makerereâ€. Why can’t we grow and learn to seperate issues of great national interest from personal and trivial politics of this country?
If MUBS is indeed independent, its administrators should have the decency, courage and integrity to give the institution another name. Laban K. Musinguzi Kampala
