THE Alam Group of Companies in partnership with their Dutch partners, African Awakening Ltd, are opposed to the proposed degazetting of Mabira Forest.

Alam Group and African Awakening Ltd entered into agreement with the National Forestry Authority (NFA) in 2004 to invest in a tourism project, the Mabira Forest Lodge, that would provide several benefits to Uganda like conservation, employment, revenue sharing, community benefits, health care and conservation education.

Recently, the government proposed to degazette over 7,000 hectares of Mabira Forest to Sugar corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL), owned by the Metha Group of Companies.

The Alam Group, however, proposes that SCOUL unite with them and the local community in the conservation of Mabira Forest.

“It is by example that private sector companies such as Alam group and Metha Group have the ability to be leaders in setting the standards and guidelines for conservation and sustainable development of Uganda,” a statement from the Mabira Forest Lodge said yesterday.

They said tourism is one of the highest foreign exchange earners in Uganda and their $2m (sh3.7b) tourism investment lodge project stands to conserve the forest as well as to provide benefits to the business sector such as hotels, restaurants, airlines, transportation and fuel.
