ON a rainy evening that should have spelt doom for entertainers, Sheila Nvannungi managed to pull it off at her Malaika album launch at Sabrina’s Pub last Saturday. It was a launch where there is nothing to write home about curtainraisers, save for singer Priscilla Kalibala who worked the crowd with her moves.

Nvannungi, who performed in the quiet presence of Prince Jjunju, proved she is big enough — physically and musically. It was an engaging affair.

This girl went down to the fans, singing and dancing for all including a mzungu reveller who was rather dazed by her sitting on his lap but clearly didn’t understand a word she sang. But Nile Breweries’ Robert Kigula knew it all. He wiggled with the bountiful woman like it was a dream come true!

What Nvannungi’s show on the low were the consistent apologies about being late and some artistes not turning up. Plus, though her fans expected a grand and princely entrance, she had none of it, preferring instead to just strut onto the stage.

Once on stage though, it was a worth while experiencing with Jeckaki Band playing her songs: Malaika, Wanaichi, Eddagala Lyo and others in raw form.

Big in heart and body, Nvannungi gave away 10% of the show’s proceeds to the Cancer Institute at Mulago Hospital.
