There’s no peace in the barrel of a gun!

SIR — The last 20 years in most of northern Uganda have been a nightmare for the war-torn region. In war, whichever side may call itself victor, there are no winners.

All are losers because war involves death and even the innocent are victims. It is therefore the duty of all Ugandans to avoid going back to war.

for the ongoing peace talks to bear fruit, an ultimatum is unnecessary. the talks imply negotiation and not forcing a surrender. i feel deadlines like september 12 should have been agreed upon by both parties rather than being set by the government of Uganda. When the LRA are involved in the setting of the deadlines of sealing the peace deals, it makes them get confidence and trust in the entire process.

Both the LRA and the government should forget their military strength because true peace is not in the barrels of guns but in the hearts of the people. If guns win wars, why did the US withdraw from Vietnam even after spraying the country with chemicals? We are all Ugandans and must work towards peace.
