ALPHA Rally Team’s Riyaz Kurji easily retained his Rwanda Mountain Gorilla rally yesterday after Zimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach, who was closely chasing him, was sidelined by a mechanical problem in the second leg.
After Rautenbach’s exit on Saturday, Kurji built a big margin over second placed Burundian Rudy Cantanhede to win his second Africa Rally Championship (ARC) event this season.
But victory in Kigali fell short of bringing Kurji (above) back into contention for the African title as Belgian Patrick Emontspool needs just one point in Ivory Coast in November to clinch the title.
Burundian Cantanhede finished second while Emontspool and Rwandan Elefter Mitraros were third and fourth respectively.
The three-day event had eight finishers out of 12 that were flagged off.
