Here is a new definition of a VIP album launch; make the guests forget their status and party like ordinary folks do.
VIPs at Bebe Cool’s Sente and Fire albums launch at Kyandondo Rugby Grounds on Friday night didn’t just sit and clap – they screamed and danced.
For the love of Bebe, many artistes outdid themselves. Joanita Kawalya showed she was still on form.
But Nameless from Kenya went beyond merely curtain-raising. His musical journey went back and forth. He performed with so much verve one would think he was the man of the night.
But the moment the King of the Jungle, Bebe Cool, strolled onto the stage in a jungle of frost, confetti and bubbles, it was pandemonium broke loose.
Moving from lovers’ rock to dancehall, he proved himself a versatile musician.
Even the interlude was entertaining enough as Bebe Cool sang his Girl, I Don’t Wanna Feel Lonely. He used the chance to give away a Motorola phone and 10 crates of Bell Lager to two girls.
The launch coincided with his birthday. But, save for the presence of Manchester United star player Rio Ferdinard’s father at the moment of cutting the cake, it was an unnecessary lull at a time when fans were in high spirits.
Rosette Akandinda had a momentous introduction to the Ugandan music scene.
The back-up singer, who only met Bebe Cool at the “City Beat Party with Bebe Cool” in May, was not only angelic in her white garb, but her soprano voice was electrifying.
The highlight of the show was when all the stars — Peter Miles, Meschan, Nazizi, Wyre and Bebe Cool stepped on stage to perform their new collaboration, Combination. The fans could have been arrested by NEMA officials for noise pollution. But it was unavoidable and necessary noise.
