THE Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has suspended storage charges on customs warehouse at the Mombasa port.

Capt. Twalib Khamis, the harbour master and chief operations officer, said in a Friday notice that the suspension applied to all cargo on vessels arriving on or after September 1.

“KPA wishes to advise that with effect from September 1, storage charges will not be levied after the ‘custom warehuse due date’ i.e. 21 days from the date cargo is discharged from the vessels,” the notice read.

Khamis appealed to all importers and cargo interests to take advantage and clear the air overstayed containers which were clogging up port operations.

He said KPA reserved the right to review and revoke the notice, reverting to the published tariffs if the situation demanded.
Clearing agents and importers have repeatedly complained of double charges by KPA at the port.
