DR. Aggrey Kiyingi on muder trial for started his defence yesterday saying his two children were driven by greed, selfishness and malice (nnugu) to implicate him in the murder of his wife Robinah.

Kiyingi opted to give an un-sworn testimony, which bars the prosecution from challenging his evidence.

Before he testified, he had been told that he had three options open to him.

The first was to give sworn evidence, in which case prosecution would cross-examine him on it, the second was the un-sworn evidence which he opted for and the third was just to keep quiet.

In his five-hour testimony in the fully packed courtroom, Kiyingi said his son Andrew Kibuuka and daughter Samalie Nakagulire had nnugu because he had filed for a divorce.

He said he filed for divorce in Uganda because he had realised that his marriage had collapsed after several attempts to salvage it.

He said he got several reports of his wife’s infidelity, two of which he said he confirmed: one involving Ssebuwufu and the other Robert Kayanja.

Kiyingi said he had tried to involve his wife’s parents to counsel them and also asked Namirembe Cathedral Bishops, Misaeri Kawuma and Balagadde Ssekadde to no avail.

He said Robinah was not interested in his efforts to salvage their marriage.
He said after he had filed for a divorce, Kibuuka and Nakagulire, for whom he had provided well, dramatically turned hostile to him and were very bitter.

He said his children’s malice was also being instigated by their aunt, Eva Kasirye Alemu whom he said told lies to the court.
He said with the help of Alemu and lawyer Andrew Kasirye, his two children applied for the letters of administration of his wife’s estates without consulting him. He said they never even catered for their younger brother and sister.
