AT the peak of her popularity, Catherine Kusasira was not only Eagles Production’s front runner but arguably the best selling artiste in Uganda.

She reportedly sold over 150,000 copies of Ekitibwa Kyo Mwami, her maiden album released in 2003. Her subsequent albums have not been successful.

Not this time. At least not from her viewpoint. The charismatic singer/actress is determined to upstage Julianna Kanyomozi from the coveted Best Female Artiste throne come Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM) 2006.

The most strategic and decisive weapon in her musical arsenal is her latest release Obufumbo Sikunanya (Marriage is not a bed of roses).

Obufumbo Sikunanya, the fourth project Kusasira has worked on, comes only months after the release of her third album Sitima. The album comprised six songs, two of which were a joint effort between Kusasira and her husband cum songwriter and mentor Fred Serugga. Although this album got some exposure and spawned feeble hits such as Sitima and Omukwano Gwompa, it was by and large a flop!

Kusasira’s last independent release, Kambasalize, comprised six songs and generally caused a buzz, but it never really produced any tangible hits. Serugga, also a fellow Eagles Production band member, says he is confident this album will reinvigorate Kusasira’s career because, the songstress has changed both her style and themes.

“For most of her career, Kusasira has mainly dwelt on praising lovers. Most of her big successes from 2003 like Sweet Wange were centered around the concept of love and love in abundance,” Serugga says.

By press time, the full album was not available for review. However, its title track, Wafuka Bikaddde, is getting heavy rotation on radio. The song is typical Afrobeat style. Co-written by Fred Serugga and Silver Kyagulanyi, the song was produced Travis Kazibwe at Geoffrey Lutaaya Studios.
