HIGH court judge Augustus Kania has ordered for new elections for the Kyenjojo district LC5 chairperson seat. Kania declared on Friday that the election of NRM party candidate, William Kaija, was invalid.
The ruling followed a petition filed by former independent candidate James Byamukama that the electoral commission had failed to conduct free and fair elections in the area.
“William Kaija was not validly elected as LC5 chairperson of Kyenjojo district. I direct that new elections be conducted by the electoral commission so that all people participate without intimidation.
“Kaija personally committed electoral offences by using government facilities that involved a car and was seen armed with an AK 47 riffle at a polling station,†he said.
While passing the ruling, Kania said through his agents, Kaija gave out money and other items to voters in Rugombe, Kyarusozi parish.
He said it was unfair for the presiding officer, Owen Rujumba, to lock out Byamukama’s polling agents during the tallying of the results.
Present in the fully-packed courtroom were Kaija and Byamukama. Byamukama's supporters chanted after the ruling.
