UGANDA Revenue Authority (URA) has impounded 70 cartons of Supermatch cigarettes, writes Ibrahim Kasita.
The owners of the cigarettes are supposed to pay sh34.9m in taxes and fines.
The cigarettes were impounded at Masafu-Ntiri road in Busia on Monday night as two small cars attempted to smuggle the cigarettes into Uganda.
Also intercepted were undeclared garments that were stuffed with declared lime cement worth sh6m and polythene bags worth sh1.6m, whose documents were forged in a bid to evade taxes.
At Busitema revenue check-point on Tuesday, there were two damaged Toyota Corolla cars. One of the culprits was admitted to hospital.
Paul Kyeyune, URA’s manager for corporate services, said smuggling of Supermatch cigarettes was rampant because they are not taxed in Kenya.
