ONLY authorised dealers and suppliers are allowed to install speed governors, the works minister said on Thursday.
John Byabagambi said this after a two-hour heated meeting that he chaired between various speed governor suppliers, Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association, Uganda Bus Operators, works ministry officials and the Police at the ministry boardroom.
“The installation and fitting of speed governors from illegal and unauthorised centres must stop forthwith,” he said.
Nathan Tumushabe, the Inspector of Vehicles, Transport Licensing Board, listed Spear Motors, Multiplex, Advance Solutions, Ureca and Ex-speed as the companies supplying speed governors.
He said, “The Government had initially authorised 10 firms but five pulled out, leaving only five to operate.”
Byabagambi said the move was geared towards ensuring that only genuine speed governors were
in place.
“We also want all the dealers authorised by the Government to give the full physical address of their businesses as well as their pictures for display,” the minister said.
He said most suppliers were not complying with the 12-month warranty because they were supplying fake speed governors.
