UGANDA Chess Federation (UCF) new boss Joseph Kaamu has started a sh20m fundraising drive to host the 2007 Africa Chess Junior championship.

Kaamu applauded the Jack Mucunguzi care-taker committee for ensuring that Uganda, which last hosted the event in 1999, is given another opportunity by the international governing body — FIDE.

making his acceptance speech at Lugogo Saturday, Kaamu promised to approach various sponsors to ensure a successful event that would attract top African countries.

Kaamu hailed the care-taker committee that was put in place in April, for managing to field a team at the World Chess Olympiad in Italy where stars Stephen Kawuma (above), Shadrack Kantinti, Isaac Munanira and Moses Kawuma finished 102nd, an incredible feat for the local body.

The committee was also able to rejuvenate the defunct chess league that attracted a record 18 clubs, conducted the national open and also the schools event.

Enoch Barumba, who attended the 77th FIDE Congress in Italy, was elected on the FIDE Executive Board at which each continent is represented by four elected members.

“It was a challenging period bearing in mind that we did not have adequate funding,” UCF publicity secretary Vianney Luggya said.

The new executive targets playing at the 2008 Olympiad and also host the junior meet next year.
