COMMONWEALTH bronze medalist Martin Mubiru (left) has joined the paid ranks in Japan.

Mubiru, 27, was the most experienced member of Uganda’s national amateur boxing team—the Bombers. But rather than lament, national coach Dick Katende said Mubiru’s departure was timely.

“He has gained the necessary experience. He’s two Commonwealth medals will also give him a good start,” said Katende.

Mubiru won bantamweight bronze at both the 2002 Manchester and Melbourne Games in March.

Mubiru, who left early this month, will be in the same camp with another Ugandan boxer Festus Omondi who left yesterday for Nagoya, Japan.

“We’ve officially released Omondi. We want him to further his career,” said Omondi’s promoter Emmanuel Mwesigwa.

Big Strikers International, where Mwesigwa is a director, have been in charge of Omondi (7-0-4kos) for two years.Omondi and Mubiru join fellow Ugandans Peter “Ishimaru” Okhello and Sadat Tebazalwa who are also based in Nagoya.
