All of us have names and I guess we love our names. But do you know what your name means? Have you asked your parents or guardians why you were given that name? Well, Elvina Nawaguna asked some children if they know the meaning of their names

It means a beautiful person who has good character. I behave well in class and at home. I know that I am beautiful because people at home tell me so. Being beautiful means that people can admire you. My mom told me that they gave me the name because I was beautiful when I was born. My name has good meaning.
- Winnie Murungi, P5,
St. Catherine Primary School

It means that I am a twin. I am the younger one and I have a twin sister called Babirye. They gave me the name because I was the last one to be removed from my mother’s womb. I like the name because it is unique; I am the only one with it in my class. All I know about the name Joseph is that he was the father of Jesus..
- Joseph Kato, 10,
St. Catherine Primary School

Kyomuhendo means that I am precious. I am precious to everybody around me like my teachers, fellow pupils and family. They gave me that name because I was the first-born and they love me.
- Elizabeth Kyomuhendo, P6, Buganda Road Primary School

Neema means “The Grace of God” in Kiswahili. My parents gave it to me because they loved the name and it was a name that would dedicate me to God. I am born-again and dedicated to God.
- Dumu Neema, 8,
Trinity Academy

Baatio means that my mother had a lot of problems when I was her womb. But Agnes is just a Christian name. I don’t know what it means.
- Agnes Baatio, P6,
Froebel Nursery and Primary School

Asiimwe means “Praise God” in Runyankore and Rutooro. I praise God by praying. I am a born- again Christian and my parents are also born-again. My parents gave me that name because they love me. Samuel means a prophet and judge; I saw that in the Bible. Maybe one day I will be a prophet, but I don’t want to be a judge.
- Samuel Asiimwe, 9,
Trinity Academy

I don’t know what Musene means, but Beatrice means “Queen of love and Care”. Rebecca is the Queen of Beauty. I think I have all those qualities because I love my friends and I care for them when they are in need. I also think I am beautiful because the Bible tells me that we were wonderfully created by God.
- Beatrice Rebecca Musene, 12, Buganda Road Primary School

Faizal means that I am a son of a king. Don’t you see that the first-born son of the king of Saudi Arabia is called Faizal? My father gave it to me because he is a Muslim. My surname, Kasoma, means that I like studies. I do my best in class. It is our family name. My father is also called Kasoma and he likes reading.
- Faizal Kasoma, P6,
Froebel Nursery and Primary School
