A mob hacked an officer of the violent crime crack unit (VCCU), in bushibokolo sub-county, Bududa district on Friday night.

The mob, that the police said was mobilised by a notorious Kampala-based robber, injured two other VCCU officers.

It also burnt the VCCU surveillance vehicle and stole three guns.

The eastern regional Police commander, Alfred Bitwire, said 30 suspects had been arrested.
“We expect to arraign them in court,” he said.

Bitwire said the ‘wanted robber’ escaped with a bullet wound in the chest.

The VCCU officer whose arm was nearly chopped off, Lt. Asuman Muwanga, was rushed to Mulago hospital.

Bitwire said Muwanga and others were on a mission to arrest the notorious robber who had sneaked back to his village.

“The unit had received a tip that one of the thugs wanted in Kampala had sneaked to his home in Bududa district,” Bitwire said.

He said, “Muwanga identified the robber’s home and made efforts to call him with the hope of picking him without the knowledge of the villagers believed to be his accomplices.

“When the thug identified Muwanga, he made an alarm with a false message that he had identified thugs who wanted to rob farmers who had sold coffee that day,” Bitwire said.

He said the thug armed himself with a panga (machete) and headed for Muwanga.

“He then hacked Muwanga on his arm and called his colleagues to help finish the rest,” Bitwire said.

He said Muwanga dropped his pistol and dived into the bush for safety.

“We managed to recover two guns. However, the pistol is yet to be recovered,” Bitwire said.
