ALEX Malinga leads four athletes at Sunday’s inaugural IAAF 20km World Road running championship in Debrecen, Hungary.

The national marathon record holder at 2 hours 12 minutes and 12 seconds, who finished sixth in the world athletics championships in Helsinki, Finland, will use his experience that saw him win a series of half marathons including the Abebe Bekila one in Ethiopia.

Malinga (left), together with Martin Toroitich, Wilson Busienei and James Kibet, will participate in the event that replaces the IAAF World Half Marathon.

The team, dressed by PUMA, has the top four finishers in the national 20km road running race in Iganga last month.

The team, to be managed by Flavio Pasqualato departs today evening for the event.

Pasqualato, who was the coach of the team that won bronze in New Delhi in 2004, will again be looking for better performance in the event set to attract over 140 athletes from 48 countries.

“We have the best team and we will surely put up a good fight. I am sure we will get a good position,” explained UAF treasurer Godfrey Nuwagaba, who is coordinating the trip.

Wilson Busienei, presently in Belgium, will join his colleagues and coach en route to Debrecen.
