The Masindi LC5 vice-chairman has warned the NRM against mishandling members of the opposition.
Speaking at an induction workshop for district councillors on Tuesday, Jacob Karubanga said mishandling opposition politicians would create disharmony and affect service delivery.
“Some of our district councils are heterogeneous but we should agree to create harmony. I know some of the councillors have been mishandled and therefore stuck in the opposition but this should not divide us,” Karubanga said, adding that mishandling the opposition would polarise the Government.
The three-day workshop held at Sports View Hotel, Kireka in Wakiso district started on Monday. It attracted over 25 councillors from Masindi, and was aimed at giving them an insight into their roles and responsibilities.
Action Aid, International Care and Relief, Kinyara Sugar Works, BAT (Uganda) and the district authority co-funded the non-residential workshop.
Karubanga attacked critics who said it was unnecessary to have it in a lavish hotel away from home.
He justified holding the induction in the hotel, saying the councillors would not concentrate if the workshop was held in Masindi.
Former MP Anthony Kanyike and Dr. Timothy Mutesasira, both of a consultancy firm, Social Development consultants, facilitated at the workshop.
Topics included communication and public relations, lobbying and advocacy, management and leadership skills, and responsibilities of district councillors and civil servants.
Kanyike urged leaders to exercise powers for improving the quality of life for the people they lead.
