Situated 4 miles southwest of Kampala on Hoima Road, New Life Bar, Nakulabye has taken entertainment to a different dimension.
On Fridays, there is a surge of fans to the place to watch what they call naked virgins who belong to a group known as Angels. People begin arriving at 7:00pm and by 11:00pm the place is full to capacity. There is a fee of sh2000 at the entrance and at the inner second gate, the disclaimer reads:
“The Management reserves the right of admission. No fire arm or any dangerous weapon and camera allowed inside.†Last Friday, while there with some friends, one of the kanyamas (bouncers) took my phone thinking it had a camera, but promptly returned,embarassed when he discovered it did not have one.
Women and men who could pass as Christians and reverends look sheepishly on waiting for the live Kimansulo (striptease). The gig begins with Karaoke and at 11:45pm two seemingly tipsy emcees emerge from the audience to perform obscene acts on the stage for 30 minutes.
Another emcee, from a hidden room, announces a special performance. A group of nine petite girls take to the stage wearing see through briefs and bras. They face the wall, waiting for the opening song.
Mbarara based Lady Mariam Namukasa’s Tindatiine blares. True to the meaning of the song, the girls have no fear. They extravagantly open and close their thighs to the tune of the song.
There is no respect or fear for the divine as the DJ spins the discs and plays Judith Babirye’s Beranange, a popular gospel track, as the girls peel off their briefs. Two men carry on provocative sexual acts with the girls, fondling them as the fans cheer.
Each girl then steps forward showing off her private parts for all to see. She then moves around to whoever feels like touching her for a fee ranging from sh500 to an unspecified amount. At some point some fans even bargain for some of the girls while on stage others join the naked ‘virgins’ and dance while the DJ spews all the obscenities he knows.
All this takes place at the rear end of the building while innocent people in the front quench their thirst at the bar.
