WILSON Busienei finished fourth and inspired Uganda to fifth position at the inaugural IAAF 20km World Road running championship yesterday.

Though the experienced long-distance ace missed a podium finish by a position, he was consoled by making the cash prize bracket, reaping $7,000 (sh12.9m) for his effort. The team of four won $6,000 (sh11.1m).

Race winner Zersenay Tadesse won $30,000 and the Kenyan team $15,000.
The team result is an improvement from tenth position at last year’s half-marathon race.

Busienei now becomes the second runner of his generation to miss out on a medal. Boniface Kiprop finished fourth in the 2004 Olympics and 2007 World Athletics Championship.

“I am happy with the performance, especially for Wilson. It will be inspiring for him despite missing out on the podium,” said an excited athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.

Simon Ayeko took advantage of the poor map reading of the leading pack to win the Kampala Athletics Club Uhuru road race at KIU, Saturday.

The Kampala International University student was in third position when teammates Dickson Kipkoech and Moses Kipkorir took a wrong turn after 5km.
He took advantage and ran to victory in 31 minutes 26.3 seconds.

The race, sponsored by YEAH and KIU, attracted top runners in the Buganda region and was a build-up to the MTN Kampala International Marathon due November 19.

“We gave them full instructions about the route and they all affirmed that they had understood. I just do not know what went wrong,” said KIU coach Ronald Kasirye.

Jane Suuto increased the pace to beat Catherine Webombesa to the women’s title in the first road event of the Kampala District Association calendar. Makerere College’s Lillian Nakasi was the revelation of the women race.

The next event on the calendar is the Lugogo road race due October 21.
