The hijab is the most widely worn attire for Muslim women. The attire goes along with a headscarf.
The word hijab comes from the Arabic word ‘hajaba’ which means to hide from view or to conceal.

There are as many styles as there are reasons for wearing hijab. To many, it means following God’s commandments, being modest. To others, it is simply gives them comfort. But what constitutes modest clothing has changed over time. The teachings of Islam command that believers should be modest with and women should not display their beauty. The dress is not supposed to attract anyone’s attention to the wearer, thus Muslim women choose earth-tone colours such as green, blue, gray, black and white. As Muslims end the month of Ramadhan, and with Iddi-Day around the corner, shoppers are flooding shopping centres for the attire.

In Kampala, the hijab costs between sh80,000 and sh150,000. The men’s attire has a complete set of Sarwal (white underpants), Smagh(men’s scarf), Igal (headband) and Tagiyah (white islamic cap) to form one complete set.

The attire can be bought at any mosque, from Mubiru and Brothers on Luwuum Street, Nana Enterprises on Burton Street, and King Fahd Plaza on Kampala Road, among other places.
