THE Royal Geographical Society (RGS) will fund the reconstruction of Fort Dufile in Moyo district.
Prof. Merrick Posnansky of the University of Archeology, Los Angeles in the US, said the project would begin in December.
“The project has been approved by RGS for funding. I hope once I get to Uganda, people will realise that our project is a worthwhile one. We are going to use the society’s crest,†he said.
Posnansky, the project coordinator, said over 30 history professors, teachers and students in Uganda and abroad, would camp in the area to carry out research.
He said they would also establish a tourist centre at the fort.
“During the 19th Century, famous scholars like Sir Samuel Baker, John Speke, Stanley and Livingstone all received RGS endorsement,†he said.
He said Dufile was a complex fort for historians since explorers, Arab slave traders, British colonialists like Charles Gordon interacted with the Madi, yet little has been written about their relationship with the local people.
“We want to find out how these people came to stay in this place through the Madi people who seemed not have been well known in the history of Uganda and that of the world,†he said.
