Biting midges also known as punkies (many times mistakenly called sand flies) rank among the smallest of blood-sucking flies (0.5 to 1.55mm long).

The most common species belong to the genera gilicoides, leptoconops, forcipomyia and austroconops. Biting midges breed mainly in swampy areas, salty marshes and moist organic soils.

They are mainly known for their blood-sucking, but some species like the gulicoides transmit filarial worms to humans and animals, which are parasitic in nature.

Control measure:
The midges are controlled by applying larvicides (for tha larvae) like Baytex EC where possible as well as using repellants on human skin. Such repellants include Autan, an ointment that is used as vaseline.
