The last we ever heard of the Shadows’ Angels was that they had given up dancing while half-naked and instead gone in for praying with Born-again Christians at the Kansanga Miracle Center.
That was three years ago. But just where have these sex sirens disappeared to?
The twenty girls had become extremely famous for dancing in such a way as would shame other African women. They would always get onto stage wearing skimpy shorts, stilettos and loose tops. Then they would go on to fondle, grope, spank and squeeze whichever male patron was inside the club. You should have heard how men moaned and groaned at the sexual stimulation! But the city’s most celebrated group split when their boss, Roger Mugisha, confessed that he had indeed been a devil-worshipper.
Today, there are still hundreds of party animals who are clamoring for just one more night with the Shadows’ Angels. But you will not find all the former sex sirens at any partying spot; neither will you find them at Kansanga Miracle Center. Just where have the “Shadows†retreated?
Roger Mugisha is still a regular Born-again Christian, often hosting fellowships at his Muyenga apartment. Of the former Angels, he says; “We are still one big family, myself and all my former angels. I could not abandon these girls because they were all like little sisters to me. In fact, right from the day I got saved, I have been begging God to forgive these girls; to settle them again, so they can find love and respect in the society even without me. I am happy that my prayers have been answered.â€
Believe it or not, one of the pioneer Shadows’ Angels has now been “tamed†into a stay-at-home mom. Probably not expected of the girl who won her stage name from shaking her booty like Beyonce! Brenda Otti was also notorious for throwing catfights at Club Silk. But she has now been tamed by Andrea Marinelli, an Italian investor who runs the Ital-trade Power Solutions in Kansanga.
Though she no longer fellowships at Kansanga Miracle Center, Otti says; “I am still saved. When you come out of the womb, you do not tell your mama that ‘I am going back inside again’. But I was so scared and confused in those days after Mugisha had confessed that he was a devil worshipper, I did not know what to do.â€
In the aftermath, she had formed her own new dance group, ‘Passions’. But this fell flat in the face since her new recruits failed to live up to the Shadows’ Angels image. Disappointed, Otti had enrolled for an Advanced Diploma in Software engineering at Aptech. But she gave up midway because she got pregnant with the baby of this Italian guy she had met during a Friday night jig at Club Rouge. Little wonder that today, she talks of her hubby and baby in the same way a six-year-old will talk of ice cream. That is, as if it is the most important thing in the world.
Cutie (real names; Claire Nekesa) had headed to the United Kingdom to study at a nursing college at Seven Seas. Before anyone knew it, she had given up the course and returned home to kwanjula her newfound lover. The latter was a wealthy Ugandan businessman based in the United Kingdom. The couple threw their engagement bash at UMA showgrounds on December 31, last year. And you can imagine all the excitement that reigned at the party in the heat of the two-year festivities.
Today, word on the street is that the relationship is ‘on hold’, after Cutie had a brawl with her fiance and even sued him for assault. The former ‘Angel’ has gone back to pursue her nursing course at Seven Seas. But it seems she has also regained her party animal instincts. The last time she returned home, Claire hired a vehicle and went dancing and drinking in all the posh nightclubs in town.
Susan Tumusiime (stage name; Sexy Sue) was the darling of all the angels, often chatting them up into loud guffaws after the shows. She was the youngest of them too. And besides, she was the one who lured some of the students from the then Progressive Senior Secondary School into the Shadows’ Angels.
Today, she is the proud owner of the Hallelluiya Facial Specialists on Rubaga Road. She made up the models for the just-ended Motocouture fashion show at Serena Hotel. Her trademark lifestyle: Party at Faze II on Saturday night and pray at Kansanga Miracle Center on Sunday morning.
Trishila went on to become a singer soon after her stint with the Shadows’ Angels. Her hit song Abasajja is indeed a throwback on her days as a Shadow’s Angel, when she was sought-after by wealthy businessmen as well as dignitaries. She had even refused to get saved, citing the fact that she was going out with a Muslim hunk. Today, Trishla is single but she still excites audiences with her lithe dance antics.
Missy (real names: Maureen Mbabazi) was so excellent for belly dancing that she would have given Fina Masannyalaze a run for her money. So, today, do not be surprised if you met her overseeing Born-again teenagers at a choreography lesson. Mbabazi is still a staunch Born-again Christian and she has risen to become an announcer at the Kansanga Miracle Center.
Agnes Kugonza was another famous bar brawler among the ‘Angels’. But she quit the group in 2002, several months before it split. She then got Born-again at the Omega Healing Center and fasted for several days on end; begging God that all the Shadow’s Angels could get saved. After Mugisha’s bizarre confession, Kugonza went to India where she studied and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion designing. She returned home barely a month ago and is now in full swing, laying plans for her fashion label.
Remember Helen Tibamanya, that ‘Angel’ who used to light up the whole stage with her brilliant smile. She seemed larger than life. Only that her dad, the now state minister for urban planning, was dying to sue Mugisha for having deviated her from school. Tibamanya had to quit the group even before Mugisha’s bizarre confession. She is now married to a Nigerian businessman and they live together in Scotland. Patrice Demina also sought solace in the United Kingdom; where she went on to do kyeyo at a nursing home. But forget the times when she was fondly called ‘Yellow Thigh’ while on stage or when hordes of men would ambush the Shadows’ home in Muyenga just to shower her with gifts; and beg for favors too. Demina is now married and has a three-month-old baby.
