Water and Environment minister Maria mutagamba recently said this at a workshop for the Africa Development Bank and Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) at the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe. Mutagamba outlined three issues that have caused the delay in the formation of a legal framework for Nile Basin countries.
“We ministers of water of governments of the Nile Basin have had several meetings regarding the harmonisation of Nile water sharing but we have still failed to agree. It is mainly due to water security, exchange of information and failure to agree on which term to use, either Nile River basin or Nile River system,†she said.
She said key issues that needed to be immediately addressed were conflict resolution, harmonisation and water resource management.
She urged the technical personnel from the 10 countries to strengthen their partnership regarding sharing of the Nile water The Nile Basin Initiative executive director, Audace Ndayizeye, said the Nile River Basin can enhance food roduction, power and industrial development, environmental conservation and tourism.
