Put aside those oversize basketball sneakers that city dwellers like wearing with baggy denims and jerseys.

Now, the rage is going for retro sneakers. These come without a neck, but have smooth leather and rubber soles. They are well-cushioned inside and fit easily.

Retro sneakers can go with everything else from denim, vinyl suits, dress shirts to cropped pants.

“Retro are a breath of fresh air from the basketball sneakers that had become too common,” says Vivian Nakandi of Loita Designs.

One of the prominent styles on today’s casual shoes scene are the plain white, converse shoes with nothing more than the swoosh logo for detail. They come in casual sporty style and look pretty cool with that conspicuous gold logo. Their heels’ air-sole unit is so comfortable. Little wonder that they can deliver high performance for any activity that an urban lifestyle demands.

Buy a new pair of retro sneakers from Kagame’s Boutique on Sunset Arcade for between sh80,000 and sh130,000. You can match them with blue jeans (preferably a lighter shade or dirty denim) or a khaki pair of cargo pants.

At Kagame’s Boutique, you will also find retro sneakers of raw suede. Girls’ ranges are sleeker and come in pink, orange and blue colours. Such sneakers look great when paired with three-quarter pants. At Nana’s, a Store on Zai Plaza however, you will find retro sneakers going for sh35,000 a pair. These are often of the Converse label and have a less comfortable interior. However, they come in military camouflage colours and are so light that you will feel like you are walking bare foot.

You can also buy retro sneakers at St. Balikuddembe Market at sh20,000.
