NINE men were arrested in Mukono district over the theft of five tonnes of copper wires worth sh50m.
The wires belong to Uganda Telecom Ltd (utl) and UMEME.
The suspects were identified as Muhammad Kato Nsubuga, Bernard Mwesigwa, Monday Gard, Emmanuel Nkrunziza and Enock Musasizi.
Others are Elias Nakunda, Herbert Bunjo, William Mutabazi and Sande Medadi.
The Police and the Violent Crime Crack Unit on Friday nabbed the suspects with their loot in stores at Lukojjo Zone in Nama sub-county.
Residents said the stores, which were manned by Security Group Company guards, were constructed in two months.
Utl’s investigations and operations officer Wilfred Mwinganesa said over 2,000 customers were affected by vandalism of the wires.
A UMEME field officer said the suspects were partly responsible for the persistent load shedding.
A source said a kilo of copper wires is sold at sh10,000 in Kenya.
