THE Uganda Rugby Cranes will not be part of the annual Emirates Dubai international sevens tournament set for November 30.
The side will instead take part in the George 7s in South Africa December 8-11.
The International Rugby Board (IRB) has this year decided to invite the Rugby Cranes to George Sevens instead of the Dubai championship. A few countries get that honour though.
A total of 16 teams including giants South Africa, New Zealand and defending champions England will take part in the first leg of the IRB series.
Uganda did not win a single game last year, having fielded a development side after many of the senior players opted to skip the trip.
“A lot has been done to improve the current squad and I am optimistic the boys will play to their best in South Africa,†URU official Herbert Wafula said.
“Not all countries were invited for the sevens series in South Africa. I think it is a big honour we should be proud of and show the world what we have,†Wafula added.
The George sevens, second leg to the Dubai sevens, will have Uganda play against hosts South Africa, France and neighbours Kenya in pool C.
Uganda made the inaugural appearance to the Dubai and George sevens in 2003 under the coaching expertise of former national captain Wafula. The side stunned France in Dubai in 2004 before the dreadful 2005 series.
