Queen Elizabeth II of England yesterday confirmed she will visit Uganda next year for the Commonwealth summit.

The queen was speaking at the state opening of the British Parliament, which marks the beginning of the parliamentary session.

“My government will continue its focus on Africa, including seeking a resolution to the crisis in Darfur. I look forward to visiting Kampala next year for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM),” the queen said.

Uganda is to host CHOGM in November next year, where over 50 heads of commonwealth member states are expected.

Opposition leaders are, however, opposed to Uganda hosting CHOGM, citing abuse of human rights by the Government.

The queen also delivered an outline of the government’s proposed policies, legislation for the coming session and a review of the last session to the Lords and members of the House of Commons.

“My lords and members of the House of Commons, my government will pursue policies aimed at meeting the challenges which the United Kingdom faces at home and abroad,” she said.

The queen pointed out her government’s commitment to international cooperation.
She also highlighted her government’s programme to address the threat of terrorism.
She also said a bill would be introduced to tackle immigration crime and to make it easier to deport those who break the law.

“My government will work with the United Nations and European Union partners to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, including addressing international concerns over North Korea and Iran, and to promote good governance,” she said.

She added, “My government will work to foster a strong partnership between Europe and the United States of America in order to meet these objectives.”
