A year after the death of one of Buganda and Uganda's most respected cultural musicians, Dr. Albert Ssempeke, a memorial fund has been set up under his name.
He is remembered in the music industry for sharing his knowledge with younger generations. He followed his dictum to the word; "that which reproduces itself does not perish".
Ssempeke is also remembered as the leading court musician in his time and was wildly travelled. He played the bowl lyre.
In Kabaka Mutebi's speech read by Buganda State Minister for Culture at the National Theatre on Monday, the Kabaka hailed Ssempeke's work.
He thanked the late for broadening and respecting the Buganda culture.
"I urge musicians to use traditional instruments and return the instruments to the Lubiru (palace)", the statement read.
The Dr. Albert Ssempeke Memorial Fund will be entrusted with continuing the musician's legacy under his group, Aboluganda Kwagalana, largely made of Ssempeke's children who trained in ganda cultural music under his stewardship.
The fund will be used to help develop skills to play local instruments.
